What is a fraction?

A fraction describes equal parts of one whole. It tells you how many equal parts exist and how many of those parts you are talking about.

The denominator

The bottom number tells you how many equal parts make the whole. In 3/4, the denominator 4 means the whole is divided into four equal parts.

The numerator

The top number tells you how many of those equal parts are selected, shaded, used, or counted. In 3/4, the numerator 3 means three parts are selected.

Why visual models help

A picture connects the numbers to their meaning. If a shape is divided into eight equal pieces and five are shaded, you can see 5/8 before you use a rule. Visual models also help you notice common mistakes: unequal pieces do not form a correct fraction model, and a larger denominator does not automatically mean a larger fraction. 5When denominators are the same, add or subtract the numerators.

Why does the denominator stay 7? Every piece is still one seventh of the same whole. You combine two of those pieces with three more, so you now have five sevenths. The size of each piece has not changed.
